We endeavour (III. xxxiii.), as far as we can, to bring about, that what we love should love us in return: in other words, that what we love should be affected with pleasure accompanied by the idea of ourself as cause. Therefore, in proportion as the loved object is more pleasurably affected because of us, our endeavour will be assisted.--that is (III. xi. and note) the greater will be our pleasure. But when we take pleasure in the fact, that we pleasurably affect something similar to ourselves, we regard ourselves with pleasure (III. 30); therefore the greater the emotion with which we conceive a loved object to be affected, &c. Q.E.D.
Modern English
We strive, as far as we can, to make the thing we love love us in return (E3P33), that is, (E3P13S), to bring about that the beloved thing is affected with joy accompanied by the idea of us as cause. So the more we imagine the beloved thing is affected with joy on our account, the more this striving is aided, that is, (E3P11S), the more we are affected with joy. When we take joy in having affected something like us with joy, we contemplate ourselves with joy (E3P30). Therefore the more we imagine the beloved thing to be affected with joy toward us, the more we contemplate ourselves with joy, that is, (E3P30S), the more we glory. Q.E.D.
