Proposition — Part III

Latin

Si quis imaginatur rem amatam eodem vel arctiore vinculo amicitiæ quo ipse eadem solus potiebatur, alium sibi jungere, odio erga ipsam rem amatam afficietur et illi alteri invidebit.

English (Elwes 1883)

If anyone conceives, that an object of his love joins itself to another with closer bonds of friendship than he himself has attained to, he will be affected with hatred towards the loved object and with envy towards his rival.

Modern English

If anyone imagines that a thing he loves joins itself to another with a bond of friendship at least as close as the one he alone had with it, he will be affected with hatred toward the beloved thing and with envy toward that other.
