Demonstration — Part V

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

All ideas, in so far as they are referred to God, are true (II. xxxii.), that is (II. Def. iv.) adequate; and therefore (by the general Def. of the Emotions) God is without passions. Again, God cannot pass either to a greater or to a lesser perfection (I. xx. Coroll. ii.); therefore (by Def. of the Emotions, ii. iii.) he is not affected by any emotion of pleasure or pain.

Modern English

All ideas, insofar as they are referred to God, are true (E2P32), that is (E2D4), adequate, and therefore God is without passions (E3DA49). God also cannot pass to a greater or lesser perfection (E1P20C2); therefore (E3DA2) God is affected by no affect of joy or sadness. Q.E.D.
