Demonstration — Part IV

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

If we see that any one rates us too highly, for love's sake, we are apt to become elated (III. xli.), or to be pleasurably affected (Def. of the Emotions, xxx.); the good which we hear of ourselves we readily believe (III. xxv.); and therefore, for love's sake, rate ourselves too highly; in other words, we are apt to become proud. Q.E.D.

Modern English

When we see that someone thinks more highly of us than is right, out of love for us, we will easily boast (E3P41S), that is, feel joy (E3DA30). We readily believe the good we hear said of ourselves (E3P25), and so out of self-love we will think more highly of ourselves than is right, that is, (E3DA28), we will easily become proud. Q.E.D.
