E4P22C

Corollary — Part IV

English (Elwes 1883)

The effort for self--preservation is the first and only foundation of virtue. For prior to this principle nothing can be conceived, and without it no virtue can be conceived.

Modern English

The *conatus* to preserve oneself is the first and sole foundation of virtue. For nothing can be conceived prior to this principle (E4P22), and without it (E4P21) no virtue can be conceived.
