Proposition — Part III

English (Elwes 1883)

If we conceive that anyone pleasurably affects an object of our hate, we shall feel hatred towards him also. If we conceive that he painfully affects that said object, we shall feel love towards him.

Modern English

If we conceive that someone affects with joy a thing we hate, we will be affected with hatred toward that person as well. If on the contrary we conceive that the same person affects that hated thing with sadness, we will be affected with love toward him.
