Revenge is the desire whereby we are induced, through mutual hatred, to injure one who, with similar feelings, has injured us. (See III. xl. Coroll. ii and note.)

Modern English

Vengeance is the desire by which, through mutual hatred, we are driven to harm someone who has harmed us with the same affect. See the second corollary of Proposition 40 of this Part with its scholium (E3P40C2) (E3P40S).
