Thankfulness or Gratitude is the desire or zeal springing from love, whereby we endeavour to benefit him, who with similar feelings of love has conferred a benefit on us. Cf. III. xxxix. note and xl.

Modern English

Gratitude is the desire or loving effort by which we strive to benefit someone who has conferred a benefit on us with the same affect of love. See Proposition 39 with the scholium of Proposition 41 of this Part (E3P39) (E3P41S).
