E5P18S
Scholium — Part V
Latin
At objici potest quod dum Deum omnium rerum causam intelligimus, eo ipso Deum tristitiæ causam consideramus.
English (Elwes 1883)
It may be objected that, as we understand God as the cause of all things, we by that very fact regard God as the cause of pain. But I make answer, that, in so far as we understand the causes of pain, it to that extent (V. iii.) ceases to be a passion, that is, it ceases to be pain (III. lix.); therefore, in so far as we understand God to be the cause of pain, we to that extent feel pleasure.
Modern English
It may be objected that, in understanding God as the cause of all things, we thereby regard God as the cause of sadness. But I reply: insofar as we understand the causes of sadness, it ceases (E5P3) to be a passion, that is (E3P59), to that extent it ceases to be sadness, and therefore insofar as we understand God to be the cause of sadness, we to that same extent feel joy.
