Corollary — Part IV

Latin

Homini igitur libero æque magnæ animositati fuga in tempore ac pugna ducitur sive homo liber eadem animositate seu animi præsentia qua certamen fugam eligit.

English (Elwes 1883)

The free man is as courageous in timely retreat as in combat; or, a free man shows equal courage or presence of mind, whether he elect to give battle or to retreat.

Modern English

For a free man, then, timely retreat counts as equally great courage as fighting does — a free man shows the same courage, the same presence of mind, in choosing retreat as in choosing battle.
