Demonstration — Part IV

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

All the emotions which are attributable to the mind as active, or in other words to reason, are emotions of pleasure and desire (III. lix.); therefore, he who is led by fear, and does good in order to escape evil, is not led by reason.

Modern English

All the affects that are attributable to the mind insofar as it acts — that is (E3P3), that are referred to reason — are nothing other than affects of joy and desire (E3P59). Therefore (E3DA13), he who is led by fear and does good out of fear of bad is not led by reason. Q.E.D.
