Scholium — Part IV

English (Elwes 1883)

Yet dejection can be more easily corrected than pride; for the latter being a pleasurable emotion, and the former a painful emotion, the pleasurable is stronger than the painful (IV. xviii.).

Modern English

Dejection can nevertheless be corrected more easily than pride, since pride is an affect of joy and dejection an affect of sadness; and joy is stronger than sadness (E4P18).
