Demonstration — Part IV

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

Pleasure (III. xi. and note) is emotion, whereby the body's power of activity is increased or helped; pain is emotion, whereby the body's power of activity is diminished or checked; therefore (IV. xxxviii.) pleasure in itself is good, &c. Q.E.D.

Modern English

Joy (E3P11) is an affect by which the body's power of acting is increased or helped. Sadness, on the other hand, is an affect by which the body's power of acting is diminished or checked. Therefore (E4P38) joy is directly good, etc. Q.E.D.
