E4Cap5

Chapter — Part IV

English (Elwes 1883)

Therefore, without intelligence there is not rational life: and things are only good, in so far as they aid man in his enjoyment of the intellectual life, which is defined by intelligence. Contrariwise, whatsoever things hinder man's perfecting of his reason, and capability to enjoy the rational life, are alone called evil.

Modern English

There is no rational life without the intellect. Things are good only insofar as they help a person enjoy the life of the mind that is defined by the intellect. What hinders a person from perfecting their reason and enjoying rational life we call bad, and only that.
