E4Cap22

Chapter — Part IV

Latin

Abjectioni falsa pietatis et religionis species inest. Et quamvis abjectio superbiæ sit contraria, est tamen abjectus superbo proximus. Vide scholium propositionis 57 partis IV.

English (Elwes 1883)

There is in abasement a spurious appearance of piety and religion. Although abasement is the opposite to pride, yet is he that abases himself most akin to the proud (IV. lvii. note).

Modern English

In self-abasement there is a false semblance of piety and religion. Although self-abasement is contrary to pride, the self-abasing person is nonetheless very close to the proud one. See the Scholium of Proposition 57 of Part IV (E4P57S).
