Demonstration — Part III

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

Individual things are modes whereby the attributes of God are expressed in a given determinate manner (I. xxv. Coroll.); that is, (I. xxxiv.), they are things which express in a given determinate manner the power of God, whereby God is and acts; now no thing contains in itself anything whereby it can be destroyed, or which can take away its existence (III. iv.); but contrariwise it is opposed to all that could take away its existence (III. v.). Therefore, in so far as it can, and in so far as it is in itself, it endeavours to persist in its own being. Q.E.D.

Modern English

Individual things are modes by which God's attributes are expressed in a definite and determinate way (E1P25C), that is, (E1P34), they are things that express in a definite and determinate way the power by which God exists and acts. No thing contains in itself anything by which it could be destroyed or which could take away its existence (E3P4); on the contrary, it is opposed to everything that could take away its existence (E3P5). Therefore, insofar as it can and insofar as it is in itself, it strives to persist in its being. Q.E.D.
