Corollary — Part III

Latin

Si aliquem quem nullo affectu prosecuti sumus, imaginamur lætitia afficere rem nobis similem, amore erga eundem afficiemur. Si contra eundem imaginamur eandem tristitia afficere, odio erga ipsum afficiemur.

English (Elwes 1883)

If we conceive that anyone, whom we have hitherto regarded with no emotion, pleasurably affects something similar to ourselves, we shall be affected with love towards him. If, on the other hand, we conceive that he painfully affects the same, we shall be affected with hatred towards him.

Modern English

If we conceive that someone toward whom we have previously had no affect is affecting with joy something similar to ourselves, we will be affected with love toward that person. If on the contrary we conceive that he is affecting that similar thing with sadness, we will be affected with hatred toward him (E3P27).
