E3P22

Proposition — Part III

English (Elwes 1883)

If we conceive that anything pleasurably affects some object of our love, we shall be affected with love towards that thing. Contrariwise, if we conceive that it affects an object of our love painfully, we shall be affected with hatred towards it.

Modern English

If we conceive that something affects with joy a thing we love, we will be affected with love toward that thing. If on the contrary we conceive that the same thing affects what we love with sadness, we will be affected with hatred toward it (E3P21).
