E1P6D

Demonstration — Part I

Latin

English (Elwes 1883)

It is impossible that there should be in the universe two substances with an identical attribute, i.e. which have anything common to them both (Prop. ii.), and, therefore (Prop. iii.), one cannot be the cause of the other, neither can one be produced by the other. Q.E.D.

Modern English

In nature there cannot be two substances of the same attribute (E1P5), that is, (E1P2) two substances that have anything in common. So (E1P3) one cannot be the cause of the other; or in other words, the one cannot be produced by the other. Q.E.D.
